Helen Farmer is a best-selling children’s author, journalist and broadcaster who has called the UAE home for more than 20 years. A mum of two, she has built her career around curiosity, conversation and storytelling, interviewing hundreds of people and sharing honest, humorous observations about family life and growing up. Her first children’s book, My Mummy’s Secret Adventures, was inspired by her own daughters and their questions about where parents go and what they do when their children are at school. Aimed at younger readers, it celebrates working parents, imagination and the idea that grown-ups have dreams and adventures of their own. Her second book, My Family’s Secret Superpowers, explores emotional wellbeing through a reassuring family story, helping children discover practical “superpowers” they can use when worries and big feelings appear. Helen loves bringing writing to life in schools. For younger children, visits can include interactive storytelling, plenty of questions and imagination, and activities that encourage pupils to create characters and stories of their own. For older primary and secondary students, Helen offers engaging writing and storytelling workshops drawing on her experience as an author and journalist, exploring everything from finding an idea and developing an authentic voice to interviewing, creative writing and turning real-life observations into compelling stories. Her sessions are informal, energetic and highly interactive, with one aim at their heart: to help young people realise that everyone has a story to tell, and give them the confidence to start telling theirs.
